Ovarian Cysts

Fluid-filled outgrowths of tissue which develop on or near ovaries; often symptomless unless large enough to press on bladder or cause visible swelling in lower abdomen or pain on intercourse; if production of ovarian hormones is affected, menstrual cycle may become irregular, but this is rare; risk of cancerous change is small, the greater risk being Peritonitis (sudden, severe abdominal pain, nausea, fever, abdominal distention) if cyst bursts. Where possible, especially in younger women, cyst is removed without damaging ovary; in other cases removal of ovary and fallopian tube may be advised. Constitutional homeopathic treatment is usually required, but the remedies given in Self Help section may be of some benefit.

Specific remedies to be taken 4 times daily for up to 14 days

• Left ovary affected, local pain which is worse in morning but wears off during period Lachesis 6c
• Lower abdominal pain which feels like a wedge being driven through ovary and womb Iodum 6c
• Right ovary affected, sore, stinging pains locally, painful periods with tenderness in lower abdomen Apis 6c
• Small, round cysts which cause pain which seems to bore through lower abdomen, bending double and pressing fists into abdomen gives some relief Colocynth 6c
