Anal Fissure

An elongated split in the rectum close to the anal sphincter, often associated with internal Piles; though rare, condition is most common in middle age, but affects some children. When a stool is passed, split is irritated, causing sphincter muscles to go into painful spasm; split may also bleed. Constipation is the root cause.

Orthodox treatment is to soften stools with liquid paraffin, or to use a local anaesthetic or KY jelly to make stooling less painful; in some cases, stretching of the anus (dilatation) or surgery may be necessary.

Specific remedy to be taken 4 times daily for up to 14 days

  • Sore, burning pain from fissure, ache in lower back, stools large, dry, hard, and knobbly Aesculus 6c
  • Sore, smarting pain on passing stools, which are lumpy and covered in mucus Graphites 6c
  • Sharp, spike pains during and after passing stools, constipation, chilliness, irritability Nitric ac. 6c
  • Burning or stabbing sensation in rectum, worse after passing stools, bowels loose or constipated Ratanhia 6c

Self-help: Try having hot baths. Wash your anal area - don't use loo paper - and wipe gently. Lubricate with petroleum jelly and use baby powder after washing the perineum after stools. Try sitting on a doughnut pillow. Don't scratch. Increase fluids to 6 to 8 glasses of water per day, and try to reduce weight if appropriate. Increase the amount of fibre in the diet, especially raw vegetables. Add natural laxatives until regular bowel habits are established.
