Penis Problems

Balanitis
Swelling and soreness of foreskin or head of penis, often caused by friction against damp underwear, or by irritants in sheaths and contraceptive creams; can also be caused by Herpes virus (see Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Complaint is most common in men who suffer from diabetes mellitus (see Diabetes), since sugar in urine encourages microbes to flourish. If homeopathic remedy and self-help measures mentioned below do not clear problem up, see your medical doctor; an antibiotic cream will probably be prescribed, but if inflammation keeps recurring, making it difficult or painful to draw back foreskin, medical doctor may recommend circumcision.

Specific remedy to be taken every 4 hours for up to 5 days

  • Mercurius 30c

Self-help: In addition to taking the remedy above, bathe foreskin and head of penis with Hypericum and Calendula solution (5 drops of mother tincture of each to 0.25 litre [½ pint] boiled cooled water) every 4 hours. Always keep penis clean and dry, and wash well under foreskin.

Blood in Sperm (Haemospermia)
Pink, red, or brown streaks in semen due to rupture of small veins in urethra during erection are quite common, but harmless, and usually clears up within a day or two; however, if blood appears in urine, see your medical doctor as soon as possible.

Injury
Usually the testicles rather than the penis bear the brunt of blows to the groin. Most common injury to penis is getting it caught in trouser zip; if this happens, cut zip free of trousers and go to nearest hospital casualty department; in meantime, bathe wound with Hypericum and Calendula solution (5 drops of mother tincture of each to 0.25 litre [½ pint] boiled cooled water); attempting to undo zip, especially if you are not circumcised, may make matters worse.

Painful Penis
If pain accompanies erection, cause may be Phimosis (foreskin too tight) or Priapism (erection occurring in absence of sexual excitement); if pain is felt during intercourse, partner's vagina may be too dry; after intercourse, inflammation or soreness may be due to chemicals in sheath, cap, spermicidal creams, etc. Redness or swelling of the head of the penis may be balanitis. Painful open sores are likely to be due to Herpes (see Sexually Transmitted Diseases); lumps or bumps caused by penile warts or syphilis (see Sexually Transmitted Diseases) are generally painless.

Penile Warts (Condylomata)
Like warts elsewhere on body, virally caused and moderately contagious; not necessarily contracted through sexual intercourse, although susceptible individuals easily become reinfected if partner has genital warts. Since wart-like growths can be first sign of cancer of the penis or of syphilis (see Sexually Transmitted Diseases), ask medical doctor for diagnosis as soon as possible. Conventionally treated by very careful application of specially prescribed wart paint; over-the-counter preparations should be avoided. Homeopathic treatment is constitutional, but while treatment is being sought one of the remedies below should be tried. Your partner should also be examined and treated if necessary.

Specific remedies to be taken 4 times daily for up to 14 days

  • Remedy of first resort Thuja 6c
  • If Thuja produces no improvement, and if foreskin is swollen and warts bleed Cinnabar 6c
  • Warts accompanied by inability to obtain erection, or by great increase in sexual desire and premature ejaculation Lycopodium 6c

Priapism
Rare and painful condition in which penis erects and stays erect even though individual is not sexually aroused; cause is sudden, inexplicable obstruction of outflow of blood from penis, or injury to nerves in spinal cord. A priapic erection lasting for longer than 3 or 4 hours can do lasting damage to spongy tissues of penis, making further erection impossible, so appropriate action is to consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 2 hours. Surgery may be needed to assist excess blood in penis to drain back into general circulation. In meantime, give one of the homeopathic remedies below.

Specific remedies to be given every 15 minutes for up to 10 doses

  • General feebleness and impotence Kali brom. 30c
  • Erection usually painful Cantharis 30c
  • Generally sluggish venous system, individual may have piles or varicose veins Carbo veg. 30c

Self-help: A 3-week course of Vitamin E is strongly recommended; take 100 units a day to begin with, increasing intake to 600 units a day. If suffering from high blood pressure, see your medical doctor first as Vitamin E can temporarily raise blood pressure.

Thrush (Candidiasis)
Also see Problems in Women > Thrush and Candidiasis

Fungal infection mainly found in women but occasionally in men if genital hygiene is poor or sexual partner is infected; yeast grows under foreskin of penis, causing itching and inflammation. Conventional treatment consists of anti-fungal cream.

Specific remedy to be taken 4 times daily for up to 14 days

  • Mercurius 6c

Self-help: Bathe penis in Hypericum and Calendula solution (5 drops of mother tincture of each to 0.25 litre [½ pint] boiled cooled water) 4 times a day for up to 15 days, then apply Calendula ointment.

Trichomoniasis
Caused by Trichomonas organism which lurks under foreskin of penis, causing soreness and inflammation; condition is far more common in women than in men, and may be result of poor genital hygiene or intercourse with an infected partner. Conventionally treated with drugs such as Metronidazole. See Thrush (above) for homeopathic treatment.

Urethritis
Inflammation of urethra, often caused by infection transmitted during sexual intercourse; symptoms are a burning sensation when urinating or ejaculating, and a thick yellowish discharge from tip of penis. See Cystitis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases (gonorrhoea and non-specific urethritis) for conventional and homeopathic treatment and self-help measures. Intercourse should be refrained from until symptoms disappear; repeated infection can cause urethral stricture (see below).

Urethral Stricture
Rare condition in which urethra becomes narrowed by scar tissue as the result of injury or infection, making urination and ejaculation painful or impossible (Retention of Urine); shrinkage of urethra may also force penis into bent position. Occasionally, urethra may narrow as result of nervous spasm. If homeopathic remedies below do not improve matters, see your medical doctor; urethra may have to be stretched under local anaesthetic, or scar tissue may have to be incised or replaced with a graft.

Specific remedies to be taken twice daily for up to 1 month in chronic cases

  • Stricture due to scarring Silicea 6c
  • Sore, burning sensation when passing water Cantharis 6c
  • Discharge of pus Mercurius 6c
  • Nervous spasm and discharge of pus Camphora 6c

Specific remedy to be taken every hour for up to 10 doses in acute cases

  • Painful spasms during urination, tingling or smarting sensation when not urinating Aconite 30c

Self-help: Bathe penis in cold water twice a day - easiest way to do this is in shower. Avoid spicy foods, and take a 3-week course of Vitamin E, gradually increasing dosage from 100 units to 600 units a day but see note under priapism (above).
