Tiny, white, thread-like worms which infest the rectum, causing itching around anus and sometimes mild, colicky abdominal pain. If child scratches, then sucks fingers or touches food, he or she can be reinfected by mouth. Typical sufferers have been described as nose-picking, thumb-sucking, nail-biting, bottom-scratching children. Conventional treatment is by anti-worm drugs such as Pripsin and Vermox, but the senna and dyestuffs these contain can cause diarrhoea.

Self-help: Insist that child brushes up his or her personal hygiene. Hands should be washed thoroughly after going to toilet, after touching pets, and always before eating. Fingernails should be cut short and scrubbed occasionally. Pyjamas should be worn in preference to night-dresses to discourage child from scratching, and changed frequently. Pets should be wormed. |
