Eye pain - as distinct from soreness, tenderness, or inflammation - can be a symptom of Meningitis or subarachnoid brain haemorrhage (pain felt behind eyes, severe headache, eye pain made worse by bright light or bending forwards, person drowsy or confused); if either condition is suspected, contact Emergency Medical Services.
Can also be a symptom of temporal arteritis (pain behind eyes and pain in temples, fever, a gluey' feeling), acute Iritis (associated with blurred vision), or acute Glaucoma (blurred vision, great sensitivity to light); in all three cases, appropriate action is to consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 2 hours.
More commonly, eye pain is associated with Sinusitis (pain behind eves, pain or tenderness over one or both eyes or in cheeks) or Eyestrain.
