Anal Fistula

A rare condition in which an abscess in the rectum erodes a tiny canal (fistula) through to the skin somewhere near the anus, and discharges watery pus through it; abscess may or may not be painful, and may be associated with Crohn's Disease or cancer of the rectum (see Cancer). Standard procedure is to clean out abscess under local anaesthetic so that fistula heals.

Specific remedies to be taken every 4 hours for up to 15 days

• Abscess painful Calcarea sulph. 6c
• If there is still discharge after abscess has been cleansed Silicea 6c
• Stitching pains darting up rectum, made worse by coughing or sneezing Lachesis 6c

Self-help: Bathe anal area with Hypericum and Calendula solution (5 drops of mother tincture of each to 0.25 litre [½ pint] boiled cooled water).
