Achalasia

?Loss of nervous co-ordination of rhythmic squeezing movements (peristalsis) at lower end of oesophagus, causing build-up of swallowed food, pain on swallowing, chest pain, bad breath, a nasty taste in the mouth, and eventually Weight Loss and malnutrition. Cause is not known, though Vitamin E deficiency may be a contributory factor. At first fluids are difficult to swallow, then solids too; if food is regurgitated, it may spill into the lungs and cause Pneumonia. Condition is diagnosed by barium swallow and/or endoscopy, then treated by antispasmodic drugs, by stretching the muscles at the base of the oesophagus with water-filled bags or special dilator rods (bougies), or by cutting through some of muscles at the entrance to the stomach (cardiomyotomy).

Achalasia is best treated by an experienced homeopath, but the remedies below may help to relieve discomfort while treatment is being sought.
