One of the symptoms of Malaria, Cirrhosis of the Liver, leukaemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, polycythaemia, etc. Spleen enlarges when called on to remove massive numbers of red blood cells, defective cells, or bacteria from circulation. Enlargement produces a dull, heavy sensation just under left ribs. Though this may not be only symptom, consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 12 hours.
In adults, spleen may have to be removed if it has been ruptured by injury or if it is destroying too many red blood cells (as in haemolytic anaemia, see Anaemia); its functions are taken over by rest of reticulo-endothelial system. In small children, splenectomy is usually avoided because organ plays a larger role in dealing with hostile bacteria.

Specific remedies to be taken 4 times daily for up to 2 weeks
- Spleen greatly enlarged, discomfort increased by movement and by lying on left side, or where enlargement is a result of leukaemia, with pain deep under left ribs Ceanothus 6c
- Enlarged spleen associated with alcoholic cirrhosis of liver, ankles swollen Quercus 6c
- Stitch-like pains under left ribs, short, dry cough, sneezing, involuntary passage of urine Squilla 6c
- Swollen spleen accompanied by constipation and craving for salt, especially if person is oversensitive and gets even more upset when consolation is offered Natrum mur. 6c
