Bruising

Accumulation of blood in tissues around a ruptured blood vessel; as soon as rupture occurs, blood platelets pour into the breach, causing blood vessel to contract so that further blood loss is minimised, then strands of' protein in blood serum mat together, trapping more platelets, and breach is sealed. Bruising occurs very easily if one component in complex blood-clotting mechanism is absent, as in haemophilia; if blood platelet count is low because bone marrow has been damaged by drugs or radiation; or if antibodies are destroying platelets faster than they can be produced in the bone marrow, as in thrombocytopenia (platelet disorder). Lack of Vitamin C, essential for formation of collagen in walls of blood vessels, also leads to easy bleeding and bruising.
