Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) aids in the metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Deficiency can lead to soreness of the lips and tongue, and photophobia (intolerance of bright light).
Sources Liver, offal, milk, cheese, eggs, fish, green vegetables, yeast extract
Supplements Available Pills or tablets, usually with other B vitamins
DRV* Children 0.4-1 mg Women 1.1 mg Pregnant women 1.4 mg Lactating mothers 1.6 mg Men 1.3 mg
Side Effects Supplements containing B2 may cause urine to become yellow.
N.B. The level of B2 in milk decreases on exposure to light.
Important Notes Dosages advised are deliberately on the safe side and may not be high enough to give benefit, but it is recommended that higher dosages should only be taken under the care of a practitioner experienced in nutritional medicine.
Side Effects refer to effects of much larger doses on the whole than those recommended here.
