Vomiting in Infants

see also Nausea & Vomiting

Regurgitation of small amounts of feed is quite normal (see Feeding Problems), but if nearly all food is regurgitated and vomiting has been going on for more an 24 hours, call your medical doctor. Repeated vomiting is very dehydrating for a young baby; if signs of dehydration are present (dry mouth, sunken eyes, depressed fontanelle), consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 2 hours and try to give sips of water with a little glucose and salt dissolved in it (1 teaspoon glucose and 1/2 teaspoon salt to 0.5 l [1 pint] boiled cooled water.)

If vomiting is accompanied by bouts of screaming, or if vomit is greenish-yellow, cause may be obstruction or Intussusception; appropriate action is to consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 2 hours, and give Aconite 30c every 5 minutes for up to 10 doses. Vomiting can also be a symptom of Gastroenteritis (with fever and frequent, watery stools), Whooping Cough (slight fever, runny nose, paroxysms of coughing), and pyloric stenosis; in latter case, baby may vomit with such force that stomach contents are propelled some distance across room. If any of these conditions is suspected, consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 12 hours.
