Jaundice

see also Neonatal Jaundice

Yellowing of the whites of the eyes and the skin, usually due to poor liver function (Cirrhosis of the Liver, and cancer of the liver - see Cancer); normally the liver removes the yellow-brown pigment bilirubin (formed as ageing red blood cells are dismantled) from the blood and sends it, via the gall bladder and bile duct, to the intestines, where it colours the faeces brown; in a person with jaundice the faeces are grey and chalky, while the urine is darker than normal. Gallstones and Cholecystitis, which prevent bile from entering the duodenum, can also cause jaundice, and so can drugs such as paracetamol, anabolic steroids, Valium, Largactil, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and some oral contraceptives. Haemolytic Anaemia in which red blood cells are broken down more quickly than they can be replaced, also causes jaundice.

Jaundice fades once the underlying cause has been treated. See causative ailments for specific homeopathic remedies.

Specific remedy to be given every 4 hours for up to 3 days

  • Jaundice caused by haemolytic anaemia Crotalus 30c
