Nodules of calcium and other salts, which tend to collect at urethral exit of bladder, causing frequent urge to urinate, pain as urine is passed, and blood in urine due to irritation of bladder lining; if all these symptoms are present, consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 12 hours. Stones can be fragmented in situ using ultrasound or an instrument called a cytoscope; the pieces are then washed out. Alternatively, the bladder is opened surgically and the stones sucked out.
For reasons which are not clear, both bladder and kidney stones are much less common now than 40 years ago; they are slightly commoner in men who have had a vasectomy; however, both conditions are related to concentration of urine by high rates of perspiration. To prevent recurrence, constitutional homeopathic treatment is recommended.
Specific remedies to be given 4 times daily for up to 14 days until surgery or fragmentation can be carried out

- Urine slimy, with sandy sediment and particles of mucus in it, severe pain felt around urethral exit as flow stops, causing person to cry out, frequent urge to urinate Sarsaparilla 6c
- Urine has stony particles in it, cold sweats, especially on feet, person overweight and in poor physical shape, craves eggs Calcarea 6c
- Fluttering sensation in region of kidneys (around waist at back), mucus in urine, distinct sensation of sitting on a ball Chimaphila 6c
- After an operation to remove bladder stones Staphysagria 6c
Self-help: Drink plenty of water (this reduces concentration of urine). When pain is bad apply heat or cold (hot-water bottle or ice pack) to bladder area.
