Ante-Partum Haemorrhage

Bleeding from the vagina any time after the 28th week of pregnancy; before then, bleeding is classified as a threatened Miscarriage. Sometimes due to a burst varicose vein in the vagina or damage to the cervix; more seriously, blood loss may be due to placenta praevia, in which part of the placenta becomes detached from the wall of the womb, preventing an adequate flow of nutrients to the foetus and slowing foetal growth; in severe cases, this can be fatal to mother and foetus.

Any bleeding after the 28th week requires prompt investigation; the best course is to consult your doctor if there is no improvement in 2 hours, or contact Emergency Medical Services if bleeding is very heavy. You will probably be admitted to hospital; situation may be stabilized by a blood transfusion, or it may be necessary to induce labour or deliver the baby by Caesarean.

Specific remedies to be taken every 5-10 minutes for up to 6 doses until help arrives

• Sudden onset of bleeding, fear for baby's life Aconite 30c
• Bleeding brought on by injury Arnica 30c
• If Arnica does not stop bleeding Bryonia 30c
• Blood bright red and hot Belladonna 30c
• Bleeding profuse and continuous, feeling sick Ipecac. 30c
• Blood partially clotted, slightest movement seems to increase blood loss, shooting pains in vagina Sabina 30c
• Blood loss temporarily stopped, feeling exhausted and very much on edge China 30c
