Greasy Hair

Caused by overactivity of the sebaceous glands, which produce a waxy substance called sebum to keep hair supple and waterproof; often associated with other skin problems, and in youngsters either with Acne or the general hormonal upheaval of adolescence. Can be aggravated by over-frequent washing with strong shampoos which destroy acid balance of scalp. Constitutional treatment is recommended if the specific remedies and self-help measures below do not improve matters.
Specific remedies to be given every 12 hours for up to 1 month
- As first resort Bryonia 30c
- Greasiness associated with tight sensation in scalp, which feels sweaty, over-production of saliva, intolerance of heat and cold Mercurius 6c
- Greasiness associated with thinning hair, especially after prolonged emotional stress or grief Phosphoric ac. 6c
Self-help: Cutting down on refined carbohydrates (sweets, chocolates, soft drinks) often helps, and so does frequent washing with mild or very dilute shampoo (try an herbal shampoo such as seaweed or rosemary). Avoid conditioners, overbrushing and discuss stopping any oral contraceptive with your medical doctor. Try rinsing with lemon or vinegar and do some form of relaxation. |
