Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension)
|
Chronic low blood pressure is almost never serious; problems occur when blood pressure drops suddenly, and arteries do not constrict quickly enough to maintain blood supply to brain; this is most likely to happen when one stands up suddenly from a sitting or lying position and feels dizzy and faint. This phenomenon is known as postural hypotension, occurring most frequently in people who are taking drugs to control High Blood Pressure; it can also be a feature of pregnancy, a symptom of arteriosclerosis or Diabetes, or a consequence of strong emotion, lack of food, prolonged standing in the heat, or being generally run down.
If you faint frequently, and especially if you are on drugs for high blood pressure, see your medical doctor. Try sleeping with the head of the bed raised slightly on bricks. Try squeezing a hand grip before standing. Mental arithmetic, such as counting backwards from 100 in sevens as fast as possible, may be beneficial, as may eating little and often and slightly increasing the amount of salt and fluids that you take. Homeopathic treatment is constitutional.
