Sweat glands in groin and under arms begin to broadcast their special odours around age of 15 or 16 in girls and a year or two later in boys. Most adolescent worries about body odour are related to these unfamiliar smells rather than to excessive sweating; Stress increases sweating, and many girls find they sweat more during their periods. Fresh sweat does not usually smell unpleasant; odour becomes offensive when bacteria breed in stale sweat; daily washing, and alkalinity of soap, discourage bacteria. If sweating is related to stress, constitutional treatment is recommended; otherwise, one of the remedies below may be helpful.
