Occurs when body is invaded be Clostridium bacteria, whose toxins attack nerves in spinal cord; symptoms are painful Cramp and rigidity in muscles of spine, limbs, abdomen, chest, and throat; cases are rare, thanks to immunization and injection procedures, but can be fatal if chest and throat spasms interfere with breathing. Clostridium bacteria live in soil and enter body through wounds, even through small cuts and grazes; incubation period can be anything from 2 days to several months. Orthodox treatment consists of antibiotics, and drugs to combat bacterial toxins and relax rigid muscles; person may also need assistance with breathing. Homeopathic remedies below should be taken in addition to orthodox remedies.
Specific remedies to be taken every hour for up to 10 doses during tetanus attack
- At first signs of muscle spasm Aconite 30c
- Head thrown back, muscles of jaw and throat in spasm and jerking Cicuta 30c
- Tetanus following a puncture wound or injury to a nerve, site of injury still very tender Hypericum 30c
- Where jaw is locked Oenanthe 30c
Immunization/prevention: Always clean wounds thoroughly using Hypericum and Calendula solution (5 drops of mother tincture of each in 0.25 litre [½ pint] boiled cooled water). If wound has been contaminated with soil and you have not been immunized or received a tetanus booster injection in last 5 years, take Hypericum 6c three times daily for 3 weeks as a preventive. In infancy, immunization against tetanus is part of DTP (Diptheria, Tetanus, Whooping Cough) vaccine; in author's opinion, side effects of tetanus immunization at this age are far outweighed by dangers of not being immunized. Thereafter booster injections should be given every 5-10 years.
