Psittacosis

Flu-like infection caught from handling large numbers of parrots and budgerigars; culprit is Rickettsia, a micro-organism half-way between a bacteria and a virus which invades lymph system and lungs; ‘flu symptoms may be accompanied by breathlessness and Nosebleeds; incubation period 1-2 weeks, and severe cases may last for 2-3 weeks, with risk of respiratory failure. Antibiotics may be necessary, and artificial respiration if breathing becomes extremely difficult.
