The testes, the male reproductive organs, migrate from the abdomen into the scrotum before birth. In pre- term babies the process may not be complete. If, for some reason, the testes become stuck in the inguinal canal (the route by which they descend from abdomen to scrotum) and have not descended by the age of five, surgery may be necessary. While testes are inside the body, they are unable to mature and produce sperm.
