Indigestion in Children

Heartburn, Belching, flatulence, Nausea, or just vague discomfort after eating. In children, if symptoms persist for more than 2 or 3 hours, cause may be Gastroenteritis. See also Abdominal Pain and Abdominal Migraine. Conventional treatment is by antacids or bland diets. Chronic indigestion requires constitutional treatment, although remedies listed below may also be useful.

Specific remedies to be given every 15 minutes for up to 6 doses when indigestion comes on badly

  • Pain comes on half an hour after eating, worse after over-eating, child irritable Nux 30c
  • Burning pains and vomiting after eating over-ripe fruit or ice-cream, worse between midnight and 2 am, child chilly, breathless, thirsty for hot drinks Arsenicum 30c
  • Indigestion after an outburst of anger, gas and cramps in stomach, child complains of bitter taste in mouth and feels worse after hot drinks Chamomilla 30c
  • Sour belching, especially after an emotional upset Ignatia 30c
  • Discomfort considerably relieved by belching Carbo veg. 30c
  • Indigestion brought on by rich food, especially if child is tearful, not thirsty, and feels worse in stuffy rooms Pulsatilla 30c

Self-help: Indigestion may be caused by a particular food, in which case try to identify what it is and avoid it. Encourage child to eat slowly and chew properly, and set a good example yourself. Try to prevent child running about too soon after meals. Slippery Elm Food, obtainable from chemists, may also help to settle stomach.
